The Lobster Database

The Lobster Database is an application that we are in the process of creating to assist Maine fishermen with their day-to-day work at sea. The database tracks and reports on all aspects of a fisherman’s business—true one-stop shopping for the lobsterman who doesn’t have much time for record keeping.

How it works

Acting as a single point of entry for daily catch information (number and type, hard shell, soft shell), daily expense information (fuel, bait, new traps or other items purchased), daily work information (was the stern man there and what was his/her cut), and location information (which areas were fished Fisher Girl little harbor, MEand what did each net), the database collects the information that is specific to the lobster fishing industry, allowing you to make critical business decisions in response to hard facts.

The Lobster Database also integrates features that will prevent the fisherman from having to use multiple applications, saving time and money. The customizable home page brings the most useful information up front and center, letting you spend less time on the computer, and more time doing what you do best. This could include, but is certainly not limited to, exact weather and tide information for the corresponding zip code and/or body of water being fished. The Lobster Database brings you the same capabilities that are used by much larger enterprises at a fraction of the cost.

Reporting: Using your unique data

As your information is gathered in the database on a daily, weekly, monthly or as needed basis, it becomes accessible through our easy-to-use reporting tool. With the touch of a button, revenue and expense can be generated to help with yearly tax preparation. Additionally, data can be gathered to watch for trends in fishing, i.e. the last 3 Octobers I have caught this much, but in the last 3 Aprils I have only caught this much. A database of this kind can help you better predict when your season should start and stop, and gives you an edge of efficiency and responsiveness in this competitive market.

The Wrapper

For public companies in corporate America there is the relatively new world of SOX Compliance. SOX stands for the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. This is legislation that was introduced and passed in the post-Enron era to ensure companies are acting in a compliant manner for data gathering, manipulation, and reporting. SOX compliance is very difficult to enforce in most companies because even though there are policies and procedures dictating how employees may or may not use their computers at work, in reality they often stray from these policies, wasting hours of valuable company time.

The Wrapper and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance

To solve this problem, we have built, and are in beta testing with, a product called “The Wrapper.” The Wrapper is a simple but powerful program that is installed on the user PC to only allow the user to do what they need to be able to do for their day-to-day work. It allows them to run the applications needed for their job function, while preventing them from accessing items not needed or banned from public use. It also keeps the user from saving business sensitive data to the hard drive of the machine, so that users can bring their laptops home without any risk of valuable company data leaving your building.

The Wrapper is available as a per-seat license for companies of any size. We can immediately show you how this application can save your organization lost work hours by preventing your users from doing something they shouldn’t.
